  • Threading the boards – acting lessons with VANESSA HUDGENS

‘Emotion is so overrated’ – Sa7m

As someone who tries (no sniggers at the back) to take his acting seriously when threading the boards an aspect of my tumblr will be a dedication to those that well … quite simply have shown aspects of their acting abilities that they might not have shown before.

My first victim I mean actor that goes under the microscope is no other than Vanessa Hudgens

What? Her? The same Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical Fame? The stage school monster brat of the new age? Why yes her! And the reason being behind the giant block of cheddar that was her Disney career she actually pulled a performance out of the bag worthy of note.

In the teen flick ‘BandSlam’ which follows the exploits of a group of seven or so musical individuals performing as a band against a rival school band for the coveted ‘BandSlam’ title our little acting starlet plays both lead singer and the protagonist of the film love interest.

But that’s not why we like her. Her character Sa7m (the 7 is silent don’t you know) is a multi-layered ball of confusion that speaks for the duration in a simple yet extremely effective monotone voice. This compared to what we are used to seeing her as a bouncy yet somewhat annoying teenybopper gave me an insight that if given a serious role what damage Vanessa Hudgens really could do. With the character having a stutter corrected as a child and a shyness resulting from it Sa7m shows a distinct lack of emotion and even facial expression even in moments of heightened tension and annoyance. While it might be an actors natural instinct to simply burst out at these moments Hugden’s maintains the characters finesse throughout and the monotone, expressionless and somewhat sullen teenager makes much more of an impact. While people may feel this is the manner in which most highly strung teenagers behaves now a days this simply isn’t the case. Hudgen’s shows that despite not showing much if any emotion through her voice her facial expressions and conveying of words make more of an impact. As her character herself said – emotion is so overrated.

While Hudgen’s career as an actress is up for debate now and her chequered career with the media and to get rid of the big elephant in the room the internet means all is left to decide. But for now she can be proud of this role a good portrayal which shows that you don’t need to be the bubbling crying idiot to show true emotion. I was surprised if not shocked when I saw her play the role in the manner in which she did. However if she keeps these individual character portrayals up I can tell you one thing years from now big awards could come her way

Vanessa Hudgens we salute you…well I do anyway!

  • Good Morning, to being this blog in earnest I want to state the best way to wake up is via song! So from the movie music company - Two Steps From Hell

This piece of music was used recently for the Prince Caspian movie and I actually heard it through an end of year montage for the Irish Airtricity League season. It’s amazing how things pop up on you!
